Mission
Our mission is to provide immersive experiences that celebrate Big Lagoon and embody all that is summer camp. We are dedicated to creating a safe and fun environment for every camper so we can maximize the opportunity to connect to our community and our coast.
Land Acknowledgement
Big Lagoon Coastal Camp occupies the ancestral, traditional and contemporary lands of the Yurok.
Summer Camp Dates and Registration
We are excited to offer both Day Camp and a NEW Overnight Camp experience this summer! Below is our tentative schedule and important registration details.

At Coastal Camp we hire people who are dedicated to camp careers and environmental education. Collectively our staff has over 40 years of experience in the field.

Director
Ian Gledhill
Ibis
Ibis has worked in environmental education for nearly 25 years. Ibis received his teaching credential from Humboldt State in 2011 and in 2016 he was AEOE Environmental Educator of the Year.
Ibis is currently the Environmental Educator for Big Lagoon School where he leads the Afterschool Adventures program. He loves making music, looking for birds, and being a dad to his two daughters. Ibis's favorite snack is chips and salsa.

Michael Shanahan
Rhododendron
Rhododendron (Michael Shanahan) is going on 13 years of outdoor education with 15 years experience running summer camps, (three of them at Coastal Camp).
A graduate of Humboldt State (Go Jacks!), he received a B.S. in environmental policy and a B.A. in recreation administration. In 2019 he was AEOE Environmental Educator of the Year.
Rhody loves exploring the creek, canoeing on Big Lagoon , hiking up hills to see great views, and singing nature songs at camp!
Rhododendron’s top stories to read on trail are NASA Elementary Globe stories, especially “the Scoop on Soils” and "The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. His favorite snack is popcorn.

Honey Bee
Honeybee is a student at Cal Poly Humboldt, about to enter her fourth year. she's majoring in Environmental Science and Management, with an Environmental Education and Interpretation concentration.
This is her third year working at Coastal Camp and after spending a gap year as a Student Naturalist at Shady Creek Outdoor School.
In her free time Honeybee likes to hike, listen to music, and do arts and crafts.
Honeybeey loves Coastal Camp and making new memories each year!

Fern
This will be Fern's second year at Coastal Camp! She has her degreein Environmental Science and Management with an Environmental Education and Interpretation concentration. Fern will be entering the teaching credential program at Cal Poly Humboldt next Fall.
